Why are we opening this position?As the organization matures, we believe now is the right moment to invest in a solid management foundation for our engineering team. Our engineering team is composed of a CTO, a director of engineering, and 4 technical leads (backend, frontend, infrastructure and data engineering) . To successfully expand our team, we need to hire a second Director of Engineering who will lead the developments of our backend and frontend team.Our mission is to evolve the CARTO product, adapting it to current market needs. In October 2021, we launched a new version of our platform that provides a fully cloud native experience, extending the spatial capabilities of the leading data warehouses platforms:BigQuery,Snowflake,Databricks, and Redshift. We have a clear roadmap of the fundamentals for next year, and a vision towards where we can be in 2-3 years.We’re looking for someone passionate about data analytics and if possible, maps. This is a fast-changing market, and therefore we want someone with experience managing engineering teams with the right balance of people, process, and systems. We do not want to have massive engineering and product teams, we rather focus on small, talented, and motivated teams. You will have direct impact on growing the engineering organization as we scale, amplifying the strengths of the teams, and shaping us into a high-quality world class engineering organization.
LocationThe position is open to remote, preferably Central European Time zone. In fact, we are mostly working remotely right now, but we do have offices inMadrid, andSevillein Spain.The role of the Director of Engineering

• Lead the development organization across backend and frontend teams.
• Responsible for the planning of the engineering teams' work in conjunction with the CTO, Technical Leads, and product management team quarter over quarter by being the bridge between Engineering and Product Leaders.
• Responsible for orchestrating and empowering the team to execute that plan with high-quality while balancing the long-term strategic vision of the product and important engineering initiatives.
• Maintain a solid up-to-date understanding of the architecture of our platform to communicate the why and decisions made to various stakeholders across the organization.
• Monitor reliability and performance of the product to recommend any improvements.
• Ensures teams understand and implement security regulations for our products.
• Bring a continuous improvement mindset to every conversation. Pushing us to get better and simplify our processes, product/architecture, and evolving how we grow people as we scale.
• Hire engineers and coordinate training.
• You’ll report to the CTO, and backend and frontend leads will report to you.

You offer

• 5+ years of experience in leading engineering teams as a director or senior manager in a fast-paced start-up environment.
• As the team is mainly based in Europe, the position requires working within our timezone (CET) +- max 3 hours.
• You need to have a strong technical background. We’re looking for someone who has worked before as a backend and frontend developer (full-stack):

• On the frontend side, you need to have provable experience in React/Redux ecosystem and building javascript libraries to be used by other developers.
• The backend team will require you to have great experience building distributed APIs in NodeJS, deeper knowledge of SQL, publish/subscriber pattern, deploy and orchestration of Docker containers, observability (we internally use H
